Rome, mid-1940s. Delia is a housewife who takes care of her husband Ivano, their three children and her father-in-law, while doing a few small part-time jobs. Ivano is the undisputed master of the family, making barely enough to keep a roof over their heads but feeling entitled to remind everyone who is the provider in the household, sometimes with nasty words, sometimes with the aid of his belt. Delia sees a suitable wedding for her daughter as her life goal - until one day a mysterious letter arrives and fires up her courage to overturn all plans.
